Here is a few commonly asked questions regarding AquaSheen Epoxy Coatings and Paint:
Well, most common pool surfaces can be coated in AquaSheen Epoxy Pool Coating. The exception to this rule will be Vinyl and previously coated Chlorinated Rubber type surfaces. Surfaces that can be coated will include: Quartz Finish, Fibreglass, Concrete, Pebble Crete, Bead Crete, Cement Rendered Surfaces and of coarse Fibreglass lined surfaces. Refer to our Application Instructions for further details.
* WHEN SHOULD I COAT MY POOL?
Typically any surface in a pool is what we call a sacrificial layer and this layer is meant to protect the structural part of the pool from wearing down. Second function is to add an aesthetic appeal to the way the pool looks. We would say as soon as you concerned about the structure being exposed it might be too late. Of course if all you want to do is change the colour that should be a good enough reason too.
* HOW MUCH EPOXY PAINT DO I NEED (PRODUCT COVERAGE)?
3.5L kit should do around 30 - 40 Sqrm of surface area, we recommend at least 2 coats. Coverage depends on the texture of the surface, rougher surfaces will require more coating. Epoxy Primer Sealant will do around 40 Sqrm per 3.5L kit.
Typically a 7 x 4 pool would require 4 - 5 kits to do a completed 2 coats. Always be safe and order a bit more if you not sure, then do an extra coat on higher traffic areas for added protection.
* HOW DOES AN EPOXY COATING AFFECT THE WAY I LOOK AFTER MY POOL?
AquaSheen epoxy pool coatings are design to provide an easy hard wearing layer on the pool surface. Generally the care for an Epoxy Surface should be no different than most pools with the exception of water balance parameters being different. Refer to our Painted Pool Care guide for further instructions.
Typical Water balance parameters: TA 160 – 180ppm, CH 340ppm, CHL below 3ppm, pH 7.6 - 7.8. All other levels as per manufacturers specifications.
* WHAT IS CHALKING OF THE SURFACE?
Chalking is the natural wear pattern for Epoxy Coating Systems alike, this however should never be noticed as the rate of chalking should take many years. If your pool is chalking to a noticeable level you could expect your water balance levels to be out and should be corrected without delay. Correcting the water balance will stop the chalking process. For example if your water balance is out in a Quartz finished pool the surface will either go rough or have scale formation.
* WHAT TYPE OF ROLLER DO YOU RECOMMEND?
We've tried a few and recommend the 1st option to be the Oldfields 11mm Nap Roller or the Bunnings Monarch Razorbacks. A good quality roller is essential for ease of painting and to get the best results.
* DO YOU NEED A FRESH ROLLER FOR EVERY TIN OR BETWEEN COATS?
No you can use the same roller throughout, but if they start breaking down then grab a new one. We recommend purchasing 2 roller covers for a standard size pool.
* WHAT IS THE CURE TIME FOR THE PRIMER? CAN THE TOP COATS GO OVER IT RIGHT AWAY?
Cure time could be an hour or two depending on the weather, if its tacky then you might rip up the substrate, also if you end up doing the first coat too late then you might get condensation onto the paint over night.
* HOW LONG DO YOU NEED TO WAIT BETWEEN TOP COATS OF PAINT?
No longer than 24 hours, usually the next morning
